What's it like on the first day at the Coast Guard Academy?

The first day at the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) will be quite intense. You're starting a 7-week program known as Swab Summer on your first day. This is a challenging and demanding period that prepares you for the rigorous 4-year journey ahead.

The first day includes a lot of administrative procedures like checking in, moving into the barracks, getting a haircut (if applicable), receiving uniforms, and meeting fellow members of your Swab class. It's not uncommon to feel overwhelmed, but remember everyone around you is likely feeling the same.

Immediately after these formalities, you will dive right into the training. Essentially, from day one, you're immersed in military procedures, discipline, physical training, and other activities designed to develop your leadership abilities and teamwork skills. You'll learn the basics of military drill, nautical science, and many other skills important to life at the USCGA.

As for tips, it's important to physically prepare yourself ahead of time. Regular exercise focusing on cardiovascular conditioning, muscular strengthening, and flexibility will serve you well. Also, make sure to get plenty of rest before reporting in. Emotionally, be ready to miss your family and friends, and know that it’s normal to feel homesick.
