What are the dorm rules at the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy, but I'm curious about the dorm rules. Are there any unique guidelines or restrictions that cadets need to be aware of while living on campus?

Sure, I can provide some information on this. The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) has a similar residential life structure to other service academies. Cadets live in a dormitory, Chase Hall, for all four years of their study.

As for some of the unique residence rules at the USCGA:

1. Unlike many civilian schools, the academy has strict rules governing beautiful order and cleanliness in dorm rooms. This includes things such as restricted personal belongings, how beds should be made, and certain items being properly aligned.

2. The first year at the academy (known as "swab summer") sees some of the strictest living conditions. During this time, freshmen (called "swabs") live under the supervision of upper-class cadets who aim to instill discipline and structure. Contact with the outside world during this time is limited.

3. Cadets are required to participate in a variety of duties in conjunction with their dorm living such as cleaning common areas and participating in safety watches.

4. Visitors are restricted to certain hours and must check in upon arrival.

Remember, these rules are designed to promote cadet development and prepare them for an officer's roles and responsibilities. Therefore, while living conditions are highly structured and may seem strict when compared to civilian colleges, they are part of the experience and development process at USCGA.

If you have further questions or want highly specific rules, it may be helpful to contact the USCGA directly or speak to a current cadet or recent alum, as they would have the most up-to-date and specific information.
