Female Population at the Coast Guard Academy

Does anyone have current statistics on the girl population at the Coast Guard Academy? As a female considering applying, I'd like to know about the gender diversity and support systems in place for female cadets.

As of the 2024-2025 academic year, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's total student population is about 1,200, with approximately 34% being female. This equates to around 420 female cadets, which is a relatively high percentage when compared to other U.S. service academies. The percentage of female students has indeed been increasing every year.

As for support systems, the Coast Guard Academy emphasizes inclusivity and offers resources that specifically cater to female cadets. For example, there's the Women's Leadership Initiative (WLI). The WLI hosts a variety of programs throughout the year such as guest speakers, workshops for skill-building, and mentorship programs to boost the leadership capabilities and career growth of female cadets.

I would also like to add that inclusion and support does not end after graduation. The Women's Leadership Initiative also places emphasis on preventing and responding to sexual harassment and assault, in line with the overall Coast Guard's policy of zero tolerance for such behavior.

Additionally, the Coast Guard Women’s Leadership Association (CGWLA) provides support to female Coast Guard members (both active-duty and retired) throughout their careers. The CGWLA offers educational and professional development opportunities like webinars, conferences, and mentoring programs.

In evaluating any academy, it's important to consider not only the statistics but the campus culture and the support services offered. The Coast Guard Academy has been taking steps to increase diversity and provide support to all members of its community. In your case, one approach could be speaking to current cadets or alumni to gain insight into their experiences at the academy.
