What does the Coast Guard Academy look for in applicants?

I'm considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy and want to know what they prioritize in applicants. Do they mainly look at academics, or are leadership and extracurriculars equally important? Also, how competitive is it typically?

As a service academy, the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) looks for well-rounded candidates who excel not only academically, but also have demonstrated leadership and a strong physical fitness background.

Academics are certainly a significant factor. Specifically, they look for hard coursework in high school such as AP or IB courses and good grades in those classes. They also consider standardized testing scores if applicants have them, but as of the 2024-2025 application cycle, they have adopted a test-optional policy, which means you can choose whether or not to submit ACT or SAT scores.

Beyond academics, the USCGA puts a lot of emphasis on leadership and extracurricular activities. They want to see candidates who have demonstrated commitment, dedication, and leadership in their activities, particularly in scenarios where they can show physical fitness. Activities that show community involvement and service are particularly valuable, given the Coast Guard’s mission.

The physical fitness aspect is key, too, because the life at a service academy is very physically demanding. Applicants are required to take a Physical Fitness Examination (PFE) as part of the application process, which includes push-ups, sit-ups and a 1.5 mile run.

Additionally, character and motivation to serve are critical aspects of the review process. In your essays and interviews, communicating your understanding of the Coast Guard's mission and how you see yourself fitting into that mission would be beneficial.

Admission to USCGA is indeed competitive. Of the approximately 2000 applications they receive each year, they accept only around 300 students. But remember it’s not all about any one aspect like grades or fitness. A holistic approach to your application will give you the best chance of success.
