How do you get a nomination for the Coast Guard Academy?

I've been considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy and heard something about needing a nomination. Can anyone explain the process? Is it similar to the other service academies, and when should I start seeking one?

Good question! Unlike other service academies such as the Naval Academy or the Air Force Academy, the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) does not require a Congressional nomination as part of the application process. Instead, admissions selection is based solely on the whole person evaluation of a candidate.

This evaluation includes high school academic performance (the core curriculum, class rank, GPA), SAT or ACT scores, participation in extracurricular activities, community service, athletics, leadership experience, and character. You also have to pass a fitness assessment and medical examination.

So, you don't need to worry about seeking a nomination for the Coast Guard Academy. Instead, focus on excelling in the areas that are evaluated. Start as early as possible to build strong leadership and extracurricular activities and maintain good academic performance.

Lastly, it might be useful to know that the application period for the USCGA opens in July before your senior year and closes on January 29th of your senior year. So, keep an eye on these dates and ensure you have all your supporting documents and scores ready by then. Good luck with your application!
