How does Coast Guard Academy swimming recruiting work?

I'm a high school swimmer interested in the Coast Guard Academy. Does anyone know what the recruiting process is like for their swimming team? Also, what sort of times do they usually look for in recruits?

The recruiting process for the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) swimming team operates like many other NCAA Division III sports teams. As part of this process, coaches from the USCGA may attend swim meets to scout potential recruits, and if they're interested in an athlete, they may contact them directly. It's also revealed to be beneficial if the athletes themselves reach out to the team's coaches to express interest and share their swim times.

When you're contacting the coaching staff, it's a good idea to include your academic information as well, such as your GPA and SAT or ACT scores. You want to demonstrate that you're a good fit for the school academically, in addition to athletically.

As far as swim times go, while there aren't strict cutoffs posted publicly, considering the competitiveness of the academy and its athletics, they are likely looking for top athletes. The college swimming website could give you an idea of current team members' best times, which can serve as a guideline.

The USCGA recruiting process, is slightly different than other institutions, however, because all students at the USCGA are also committing to serve in the military after graduation. Therefore, the admissions process also involves determining if candidates are a good fit for a career in the military, including a physical fitness exam and medical exam.

To sum up, to become a swim recruit at the USCGA, you should:

1. Maintain a good academic standing

2. Get top swim times in your events

3. Reach out to the coaching staff at the USCGA to express interest

4. Be prepared for the physical fitness and medical examinations as part of the admissions process

Remember, even though they may be scouting, being proactive in the recruitment process can give you an edge!
