What is the service obligation after graduating from the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy and I heard there's a service obligation. Can someone explain what the commitment looks like after graduation? How long does it usually last?

Absolutely, the United States Coast Guard Academy indeed has a service commitment for students upon graduation. Everyone who graduates from the Coast Guard Academy is appointed as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, which comes with a five-year service obligation.

During these five years, you may serve at sea or on land, in positions such as operations afloat, prevention, response, aviation, and many others. These roles offer a unique opportunity not only to serve your country but also to gain valuable skills, and experience that can be highly beneficial later in your career, whether you choose to stay in the military or move into civilian life.

It's important to keep in mind, however, that the five-year service obligation is a minimum. Many graduates find they enjoy their work in the Coast Guard and choose to stay well beyond their initial term of service. If you decide to pursue further education while in the Coast Guard, particularly in specialized areas such as flight training, the service commitment may also be longer.

Overall, the service obligation is a trade-off for receiving a top-tier education at no cost, while also receiving a salary during your time at the Academy. This is certainly something to consider as you think about applying.
