What Does Summer Training at the Coast Guard Academy Involve?

I'm trying to get an idea of what summer training entails for cadets at the Coast Guard Academy. Is it similar to boot camp or more specialized? How intense is the training, and what kind of skills do cadets learn?

Cadet training at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is quite rigorous and can be compared to boot camp in certain aspects. However, it's a unique experience designed to prepare cadets holistically for their roles in the Coast Guard.

In their first summer, freshmen cadets embark on a seven-week program known as "Swab Summer." This program is designed to transition them from civilian life into military life. Cadets learn about customs and traditions of the service, undergo physical conditioning, and start building their leadership and teamwork skills. They partake in exercises to test their perseverance and fortitude such as early morning physical training, obstacle courses, and water survival training.

After their first year—in the second summer—cadets get hands-on experience in Coast Guard operations during the summer deployment aboard cutters, small boats, and land units around the country. They get exposed to activities like navigation, seamanship, and engineering, and participate in military drills and real-life search-and-rescue missions for practical experience.

During their third summer, cadets choose to undergo Aviation training, Dive training, or Leadership training. They also get a chance to lead the incoming class of freshmen during the Swab Summer, thus applying their leadership skills.

Their final summer entails a period of independently designed research or work internships that align with their interests, often in areas such as law enforcement, environmental protection, or maritime security.

The training is intense and the days can be long, but the skills cadets gain—leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, physical stamina, and a deep understanding of the Coast Guard's roles and responsibilities—are key to their successful service in the Coast Guard.
