What is graduation week like at the US Naval Academy?

I'm considering applying to the US Naval Academy and really want to know more about what graduation week involves. Are there specific traditions or events that are a big deal? Any tips for family members attending?

Graduation week at the US Naval Academy, also known as Commissioning Week, is a highly anticipated event filled with a week-long schedule of activities and ceremonies leading up to graduation and commissioning as Ensigns in the Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps.

Traditions during Commissioning Week are deeply rooted in the culture of the Naval Academy. One of such events is the Herndon Monument Climb, a highlight of the week, in which plebes (freshmen) work together to climb a large, greased monument to retrieve a plebe hat at the top and replace it with an upperclassman's hat.

Another tradition is the Blue Angels flight demonstration. This typically happens a couple of days before the graduation ceremony and the entire community comes out to watch the thrilling display.

There's also a Color Parade, the oldest parade at the Academy, featuring the entire Brigade of Midshipmen marching in an inspiring display of precision and military discipline.

The graduation ceremony itself is a moving experience, culminating in the symbolic hat toss at the end, which is probably one of the most photographed moments of any US military academy graduation.

During that week, various award ceremonies and company receptions are held as well, along with the commissioning ceremonies.

If family members are planning to attend, booking accommodations early is highly recommended as Annapolis tends to fill up quickly during Commissioning Week. Wear comfortable shoes as you'll likely do a lot of walking around the campus. Also, note that several events require tickets, so it's essential to coordinate with your midshipman.

In summary, Commissioning Week at the US Naval Academy is an exciting time full of tradition, celebration and much anticipation for the new adventures that lie ahead for the graduates. It's an event that's proudly attended by family members and friends who come to honor the hard work and dedication of these future military officers.
