Living Near the Naval Academy: What Are the Options?

If my goal is to attend the Naval Academy and live off-campus, what housing options are available nearby? Are there certain areas that students typically live in, and what's the typical rent like?

In terms of housing, students attending the Naval Academy generally do not have the option to live off-campus. The Naval Academy has a very strict residential policy - all midshipmen are required to live in Bancroft Hall on campus for the duration of their four years of study. Bancroft hall is a massive dormitory that houses all students, with its services and facilities designed to accommodate the lifestyle and needs of midshipmen. This policy is part of the overall arrangement in service academies, which, apart from academics, focus heavily on regimented daily schedules, including physical training and character development.

Although living off-campus is generally not an option, it's important to note that the Annapolis area, where the Naval Academy is located, has numerous housing options, ranging from apartments to townhouses to single-family homes. If for some reason, housing off-campus becomes necessary or is approved under exceptional circumstances, it would be best to carefully assess the rental market in these areas. The cost of rent can vary significantly depending on the location and type of housing, but on average, you might expect to pay somewhere between $1,200 and $2,500 per month.

However, as a rule, plan to stay on campus in Bancroft Hall if you're attending the Naval Academy. It not only forms a crucial part of the academy's training and education but also enhances camaraderie and unity among students. If your family or you are thinking of moving to the area during your time at the academy, researching rentals or housing in Annapolis would be a good place to start.
