How does the Naval Academy Prep School work?

I'm contemplating a career in the Navy and heard about the Naval Academy Prep School. Can someone explain how it functions and what the requirements are for attending? Any insider tips on the application process would be awesome!

The United States Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) is a year-long program designed to provide candidates who have received a Naval Academy appointment an opportunity to improve their academic and physical readiness before they enroll in the Naval Academy. It's situated in Newport, Rhode Island, and serves as a stepping stone for individuals who need to strengthen their performance in math, chemistry, English, or physics.

To stand a chance of going to NAPS, you'll first need to apply to the Naval Academy. During the process, if the admissions board has concerns about your academic preparedness, they may offer you a spot at NAPS instead of a direct appointment to the Academy itself. Typically, they look for individuals who demonstrate potential for success at the Naval Academy but may lack the rigorous academic background or structured physical training.

Remember, receiving an offer from NAPS doesn't mean the Naval Academy is out of reach. Quite the opposite; over 90% of NAPS graduates continue to the Annapolis campus and become commissioned officers.

As for application tips, make sure you apply to the Naval Academy first and keep your application up to date by regularly checking in with your regional Naval Academy Admissions Counselor. Ensure that your physical fitness is on point (you can check the standards online) and that you've excelled in courses relevant to the Naval Academy's core curriculum. Leadership in extracurricular activities, especially Tier 1 and 2, could also bolster your application.

Lastly, keep in touch with the Naval Academy Admissions Office. They should be your primary source of information about the process, and they can provide valuable insights and guidance.

Best of luck with your application and potential naval career!
