Entering the Naval Academy as enlisted?

I'm currently enlisted and curious about how I might transition to the Naval Academy. What are the steps and requirements for those already serving who want to attend the academy? Any advice or resources would be appreciated!

The process for enlisted sailors in the Navy and Marines applying to the U.S. Naval Academy is somewhat different from that of civilians.

For enlisted members, there is something called the Enlisted to Officer program to help facilitate this transition. If you are interested in the Naval Academy, you might want to look into the USNA's Seaman to Admiral (STA-21) program as one option. It allows USN and USMC enlisted members to earn a bachelor's degree and a commission as a Navy or Marine Corps officer.

The base requirements to apply to the U.S. Naval Academy include being of good moral character, being at least 17 years old and not past your 23rd birthday on July 1st of the year you would enter the Academy. There are also physical fitness and medical requirements that need to be met.

As an enlisted member who is applying through the STA-21 program, your application packet would include the following:

1. STA-21 Program Application Administrative Data Form

2. Interview Appraisal Sheets from three senior officers

3. Current Photograph in khaki uniform - Full length, 1/4 length (no hat), and full length (cover)

4. Copy of SAT or ACT scores

5. Transcripts

6. Personal Statement

The application process for enlisted personnel may also involve endorsements from commanding officers.

The Naval Academy has ample resources to assist in preparing an application package, and I would recommend reaching out to your command’s Navy Counselor (NC), or the base Education Officer for more detailed advice and guidance. Naval Academy Admissions also has counselors specifically designated to guide enlisted sailors and marines.

It’s also important to prepare for the academic rigor of the Academy by taking courses that could help bolster your academic profile, like math and science classes. And, be prepared for the competitive nature of the selection process. Be proactive about improving yourself as a candidate in all areas – academically, physically, and in terms of your military performance.

Remember, even for enlisted members, acceptance into the Naval Academy is competitive, so make sure to start early and make your application as strong as possible. Good luck!
