Choosing Marines After Graduating from the Naval Academy

What steps should I take if I want to join the Marines after graduating from the Naval Academy? I’d like to understand the choices available and how previous graduates have transitioned into Marine roles.

The Naval Academy provides an excellent path for those intending to join the Marine Corps. To streamline your journey from the Academy to the Marine Corps, you'll want to follow a few key steps:

1. Major Selection: While your chosen major won't explicitly affect your commissioning into the Marines, know that certain roles in the Marines may require specific technical expertise. Some majors may also be more rigorous, potentially affecting your Class Order of Merit, so consider your workload and interests when choosing a major.

2. Physical Fitness: The Marines place a high emphasis on physical fitness. Perform well on your Physical Readiness Test (PRT) to showcase your physical capabilities. Participation in a varsity sport or rigorous club sport could also demonstrate your physical fitness and commitment.

3. Service Selection: When it comes to service selection (choosing your branch), remind your chain of command of your desire to join the Marines. Your performance both academically and physically, as well as your leadership roles, will play a vital role in your selection.

4. Leadership: Strive for leadership roles, whether in your plebe summer detail, your company, clubs, or sports teams. Demonstrating good leadership and character is essential for a future Marine Officer.

5. Mentoring: Seek out mentors, particularly alumni or faculty who served in the Marines. They can provide advice and guidance, both for your time at the Naval Academy and for your future career in the Marines.

Post-graduation, you'll attend The Basic School (TBS) in Quantico, Virginia for six months of officer training. This is a standard path for Marine Officers and will allow you to transition smoothly into your career.

Remember, your journey isn't strictly linear; you have some control over it, guided by your performance, interests, and determination. Marines are known for their ethos of honor, courage, and commitment, so sustain those principles in mind as you journey through the Academy and beyond.
