How do academic departments work at the Naval Academy?

I'm seriously considering applying to the Naval Academy, but I'm curious about how their academic departments are structured. What kind of majors do they offer, and are there specific departments that stand out as particularly strong?

The United States Naval Academy (also known as USNA, Annapolis, or Navy) organizes its undergraduate academic programs across multiple divisions, falling within departments such as Aeronautical Engineering, English, History, and more. They offer a broad array of majors ranging from technical disciplines like Aerospace Engineering, Cyber Operations, and Chemistry to non-technical subjects like History, English, and Political Science. They even provide some joint majors like Quantitative Economics combining the strengths of multiple departments.

Most USNA students pursue technically oriented degrees (around 65%), with all majors emphasizing the importance of technical and scientific knowledge in today's Navy and Marine Corps. All midshipmen, regardless of major, receive a bachelor of science degree due to the technical content of the core curriculum.

For strength of academic departments, it's worth noting that the Naval Academy is recognized particularly for its engineering and technological programs. The engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, so they meet the standards of the engineering industry. Graduates from USNA, regardless of their major, have been historically successful in earning national scholarships like Rhodes, Marshall, and Truman scholarships, underlining the quality of education across all departments at the Academy.

Another standout area would be the USNA's Leadership, Ethics and Law Department, which is unique to service academies. It's dedicated to educate and develop midshipmen by shaping their personal and professional ethical development through a structured, progressive and sequential four-year core curriculum.

However, it's essential to align your major with your interest and intended career path. All academic programs at the USNA are designed to prepare you for leadership roles in the military, and your enthusiasm and dedication to your chosen major will enable you to get the most out of your education at the Naval Academy.
