How does the Naval Academy handle ADHD?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy, but I have ADHD. Does anyone know how well they accommodate students with ADHD? Any experiences or insights would be super helpful!

The Naval Academy, like other military institutions, has a more complicated approach to ADHD than most traditional colleges. It's a two-fold process: medical eligibility for admission and academic accommodations while enrolled.

For admission, candidates with a history of ADHD must exhibit at least 24 continuous months of performance without the use of medication right before matriculation. That's under the guidelines of the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB), the agency responsible for determining medical qualifications for admission. This is due to military safety concerns around the potential risks associated with taking certain medications, like those frequently used to manage ADHD, in a combat or high-stress environment. If you are currently dependent on medication to manage your symptoms, this could potentially be a disqualifying factor.

Once admitted to the academy, however, accommodations to support your academic success can be provided under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It prohibits discrimination based on disability and mandates the provision of reasonable accommodations — such as extended time on tests, quieter test-taking environments, or the use of a computer for essay exams. Importantly, though, accommodations that fundamentally alter the academic program, lower academic standards, or present an undue administrative burden are generally not provided.

Furthermore, the regimented lifestyle at service academies is significantly structured, which some individuals with ADHD might find helpful. The predictability and routine can sometimes reduce the impact of symptoms.

Even if you face some challenges, the pursuit of such a noble path is commendable. Be sure to reach out to your peers, professors, and support services at the academy – they can provide valuable support and strategies for managing ADHD in the unique environment of a military academy. Good luck with your application process!
