What does the Naval Academy admission board look for?

I'm trying to gauge what the admission board at the Naval Academy really emphasizes during their review process. Is it more about academic performance, leadership, or physical fitness? Any tips would be appreciate it!

The U.S. Naval Academy looks at the whole candidate in their admissions process and assesses applicants in three areas: academic performance, physical fitness, and demonstrated leadership.

Academic performance or "scholastic aptitude" is an essential part of the application. This area takes into consideration your grades, course rigor (it’s recommended but not required to take calculus and physics), class rank, and standardized test scores—SAT or ACT.

Physical fitness is evaluated through a Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA). This includes various physical tests like push-ups, sit-ups, a basketball throw, pull-ups (or a flexed-arm hang for females), and a one-mile run, so make sure you're training for these.

Leadership experience is equally important. They're interested in seeing students who have shown significant involvement and leadership qualities in activities. This can be in various areas like sports, clubs, or community service. Think of areas where you have shown initiative, managed a team, or contributed significantly to a project or event.

While it's not an explicit requirement, the Naval Academy is also interested in candidates who have a clear motivation to serve. This could be demonstrated in an application essay, interview responses, or extracurricular involvement.

Remember, there is no specific weighting for these areas and a weakness in one can be balanced by a strength in another. An outstanding academic record can help compensate for a mediocre CFA score, for example. Applicants should strive to be competitive in all areas and should focus on showing a consistent commitment to leadership, service, and physical fitness throughout high school. The Naval Academy also has a strong emphasis on character—in particular, they look for individuals exhibiting traits like honesty, responsibility, and courage. Keep in mind the Naval Academy's mission is to develop leaders to serve their country, so these aspects are of key importance.
