How important are standardized test scores in Naval Academy admissions?

I heard that the Naval Academy considers ACT and SAT scores in admissions. Does anyone know how heavily these scores weigh in the decision process, and what the requirements are?

In terms of the admissions process for the United States Naval Academy (USNA), standardized test scores are indeed important and they have quite an influence on the admissions decision. As with most competitive institutions, a higher score increases your competitiveness, but it's not the sole factor in admissions decisions.

The middle 50% SAT scores for Naval Academy admits typically range from 1300 to 1440 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing + Math. ACT Composite scores usually range from 25 to 32. However, these are just the middle 50% scores, meaning a large portion of accepted students score above and some score below these ranges. There is no minimum requirement, but the school recommends aiming for these ranges to increase your chances.

However, the USNA takes a fairly holistic approach to admissions, which means they look at the whole applicant, not just test scores. Other factors such as leadership abilities, athletic performance, recommendations, and personal qualities are also seriously considered. Prospective students are evaluated on a composite score that considers academic metrics as well as character and leadership.

Keep in mind, the USNA is competitive and an appointment also requires a nomination (typically from a U.S. Representative or Senator), a medical examination, and a fitness assessment.

In sum, standardized test scores are an important piece of the puzzle, but they are just one aspect of the application. Your overall profile—including leadership, character, athletics, and academic performance—also carries a significant weight in the admissions decision.
