Where can I find the best need-based scholarships?

As I prepare for college applications, I know I'll need financial assistance. What are some highly regarded need-based scholarships that offer substantial aid?

One of the best ways to obtain sizeable need-based scholarships is to apply to colleges that guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated need. Many top colleges, such as Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton, pledge to do this for their admitted students. A good metric for you to check is whether a school is need-blind and also meets the full financial need. Keep in mind, however, that 'demonstrated need' varies by school. For a relatively accurate estimate, use the Net Price Calculator found on every college's financial aid website to calculate your expected financial aid package.

Next, consider need-based federal aid. If you're a U.S. citizen, be sure to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Depending on your family's financial situation, you may qualify for a Pell Grant, which does not need to be paid back and offers substantial aid. Also, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) provides between $100 to $4000 annually to students in need.

For scholarships that are not tied directly to colleges, the Gates Scholarship and Horatio Alger Scholarship are both prestigious national scholarships that offer significant aid based on financial need.

Also, don't forget state-based and community scholarships. Some state funding programs can be especially generous, like the Excelsior Scholarship for New York residents attending SUNY or CUNY schools. Many local businesses, rotary clubs, and foundations also offer scholarships primarily for local students, which could be less competitive as they are offered to a smaller applicant pool.

Remember, the key to securing scholarships is applying to as many as you are eligible for. Every bit helps, and it all adds up. Good luck!
