What is the Coast Guard Academy's Swab Summer like?

I've been considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy and I'm curious about what Swab Summer entails. It seems pretty intense, but I'd love to hear from someone who's gone through it. How tough is it and what can I expect?

Swab Summer at the Coast Guard Academy is indeed quite intensive and is designed to transition students from civilian life to military life. While I personally haven’t experienced it, I can share a general overview that might help you understand what it entails.

The term “Swab” refers to first-year cadets, and the summer is a seven-week training program before your first academic year begins. It's designed to be challenging both mentally and physically. On the physical side, you can expect regular physical training (PT) which can include running, swimming, and various conditioning exercises, so it's advisable to maintain good physical condition before the summer begins. As for the mental aspect, expect to learn about military customs and courtesies, nautical science, basic seamanship, and Coast Guard history.

The key point to remember is this: the process is designed to be overwhelming, in order to form a resilient attitude under stress (a vital attribute for Coast Guard officers). Also, leadership training is a fundamental part of the curriculum, so problem solving and decision-making under stress will be expected.

Finally, though Swab Summer is rigorous, it is equally rewarding. It's not only about military training but also about shaping team spirit and fostering deep relationships with your fellow Swabs. It's about developing qualities necessary for future leaders of the Coast Guard. It is meant to push you out of your comfort zone as you prepare to undertake the responsibilities that come with the role. Despite the challenges, at the culmination of the summer, Swabs are part of a close-knit community and ready to start their academic careers at the Academy. It's a transformative experience preparing you for a dynamic future.

Remember that everyone might have different experiences and this could vary from year to year. It might be a good idea to connect with current cadets or alumni through the Academy's networking resources to hear firsthand experiences. They could provide deeper insights and personal anecdotes from their Swab Summer. Good luck with your path towards the Coast Guard Academy!
