What's the housing situation like at the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm interested in applying to the Coast Guard Academy and would love to know more about their housing options. Do students live on campus all four years? Are there any unique housing arrangements I should know about?

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does provide on-campus housing for all of its cadets, all four years. Cadets live in a dormitory setting, which helps develop camaraderie and companionship amongst cadets, which can be critical given the challenging nature of the academy.

There are two main dormitory buildings on the Coast Guard Academy campus: Chase Hall and Billard Hall. Within these buildings, you'll generally find rooms organized into two-person spaces, with communal bathrooms.

Chase Hall, where most students live, has recently undergone extensive renovations to improve the quality of accommodations. The rooms in Chase Hall are typically quite spacious and come with standard furniture like beds, desks, and chairs. The dormitory also features common areas for studying and socializing, as well as laundry facilities.

Something to note is that the distribution of rooms can change from year to year, depending on the number of cadets within each class year. In the past, first-year cadets were assigned to upper-class cadets as roommates to facilitate the transition into academy life.

It's also important to keep in mind that as a military institution, the Coast Guard Academy follows strict regulations and routines, which extends to the housing setting as well. This includes a structured schedule, inspections, and following the rules and procedures established by the academy.

Overall, cadets often find living on campus to be more than just a place to sleep, but an important setting for personal and professional development. With its strategic location, the campus also offers stunning views of the Thames River and easy access to academic buildings and amenities.
