What's the salary after graduating from the Coast Guard Academy?

Thinking about the Coast Guard Academy and wondering what the salary is like after graduation. How does it compare to the salaries from other military academies? Does it offer good benefits?

Upon graduation, those who attend the United States Coast Guard Academy will be commissioned as Ensigns in the U.S. Coast Guard. The base yearly salary for this rank is approximately $37,292, not including the additional amounts you'll get for housing allowance, food stipend, and other varying benefits. This is fairly standard across all the military academies, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Merchant Marine academies - they all commission their graduates at this same rank (Ensign or equivalent), and the initial salary is within the same range.

In addition to the base salary, benefits play a huge role. You will have a comprehensive healthcare and dental plan, and access to various amenities and facilities. Plus, uniform allowance and incentive pays are part of the compensation.

Long-term financial incentives are also promising. After approximately two years of service, assuming satisfactory performance, one can expect a promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade, followed by Lieutenant after another two years, each with corresponding pay increases. There are also merit-based scholarships available to those who wish to pursue further education.

Another facet to consider is life after active duty. Veterans benefits, including for education and home loans, could still be accessed long after completing your service. Indeed, the pure monetary compensation may not be comparable to certain civilian jobs immediately after graduation, but the comprehensive package (base pay, benefits, and future prospects) is considerably valuable.
