As a federal military academy, life at the United States Coast Guard Academy is somewhat unique compared to a traditional college. Cadets live in a structured and disciplined environment, designed to prepare them for a service-based career.

All cadets live on campus in Chase Hall. The dorms are arranged in a military style with two cadets per room usually. The rooms are functional, with storage for uniforms and personal belongings. Cadets are expected to maintain their rooms to a high standard of cleanliness.

The academic workload is quite intense, with cadets taking courses in traditional academic subjects, as well as subjects related to maritime science and military studies. Much of a cadet's day is structured around classes, physical training, military instruction, and professional development.
