How is the academic year schedule organized at the Naval Academy?

I'm planning a visit to the Naval Academy and it would be helpful to know about their academic year schedule. Do they have semesters or quarters, and are there unique dates that applicants should be aware of?

The United States Naval Academy uses a two-semester academic system. The first semester typically begins in late August or early September, and it ends in December, before the holiday break. The second semester usually resumes in January, concluding in late May.

There is a summer training period for midshipmen between academic years. This time is typically filled with professional training, including cruises for upperclassmen and preparatory sessions like sea trials and martial exercises for plebes (freshmen).

From an admissions perspective, candidates should also be aware of a few crucial dates. The summer seminar, a program that allows prospective students to experience life at the academy, takes place in June. The deadline to apply for the summer seminar is usually in late March or early April.

Also, applications for the following academic year usually open in April and due by January 31. However, early submission is recommended to meet the rolling nomination process deadlines which typically run from late October through January.

These details, including specific dates, can change from year to year. I highly recommend checking the academy's official website to get the most accurate information for the academic year you're interested in. It's also important to remember to apply for nominations from local representatives, senators, or other eligible nominators, which are a requirement for appointments to service academies like the Naval Academy.
