Understanding the Coast Guard Academy's Physical Fitness Requirements

What are the physical fitness requirements for the Coast Guard Academy? I'm curious about the specific exercises and standards for admission, as physical fitness is a key factor in their evaluation process.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy indeed takes physical fitness seriously. Physical readiness helps aspiring cadets demonstrate they have the physical robustness necessary to make it through the rigorous training program at the academy.

Before arriving at the academy, you will be required to pass a Physical Fitness Exam. The exam consists of three events: push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run.

1. Push-ups: The number of push-ups varies depending on age and gender. However, the aim is to do the maximum number of push-ups without rest in 60 seconds. A good goal for males is generally around 30-40 push-ups, while for females it's around 15-25.

2. Sit-ups: Much like the push-ups, the number varies, but you have 60 seconds to perform as many as you can. A good number to aim for is typically around 35-45 for both males and females.

3. 1.5-mile run: The goal time for this event also varies by gender. Males usually aim for a time of about 10-12 minutes, while females aim for around 12-14 minutes.

To pass the exam, a candidate needs to score at least 65 points in each event, with the points determined by age and gender normed standards.

Once you are admitted, students are required to pass a physical fitness exam each semester to ensure they are maintaining an appropriate level of physical fitness. The fitness classes teach activities designed to improve cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition.

Students who fail to meet the required standards are enrolled in a remedial fitness class and must pass the Physical Fitness Exam by the end of the semester.
