What job training is available for returning military members?

I'm transitioning out of the military and looking for programs that offer job training to help veterans adjust to civilian careers. What are some recommendations for training programs that are particularly helpful or well-regarded?

There are several programs for military personnel transitioning back into civilian life that offer valuable job training. Here are just a few:

1. The Department of Defense's DoD SkillBridge program is an excellent resource to look into. SkillBridge matches transitioning service members with industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the final part of their service. Essentially, you'd be granted permissive duty to leave your unit and work full-time for a civilian company to learn the ins-and-outs of the industry, all while remaining on active duty and receiving your military compensation and benefits.

2. The Department of Veterans Affairs also offers the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) program. This program assists veterans with service-connected disabilities to prepare for, find, and maintain suitable careers. If you’re eligible for this program, you may access help exploring employment options and any required training, as well as other support services.

3. If you're considering a career in tech, Microsoft Software & Systems Academy (MSSA) provides military service members and veterans with critical career skills required for today’s growing technology industry.

4. Helmets to Hardhats is a national program that connects National Guard, Reserve, retired and transitioning active-duty military members with career opportunities in the construction industry. It's particularly useful if you're interested in a trade career.

5. If you’re interested in entrepreneurship, the Small Business Administration (SBA) offers the Boots to Business (B2B) program, which provides you with the tools, information, and resources to launch, grow, and make your business successful.

Remember that it's crucial to not only think about where you want to work, but what type of work you're drawn to. Reflect on the skills and experiences you gained in the military, and consider how they might translate to a civilian career. This will help you sharpen your focus as you explore these various training programs.
