Military Medical Careers

I've always been interested in medicine and I'm thinking about joining the military. What medical jobs are available in the military and what kind of training or education do they require?

There are several medical careers within the military that range from direct patient care to research and development. The military offers a diverse pool of opportunities for individuals interested in medical professions. Here are a few options:

1. Combat Medic: As a combat medic, you provide immediate frontline care in a combat zone. You will be trained to diagnose and treat numerous injuries or conditions. To become a combat medic, you need a high school diploma or equivalent and complete basic combat training followed by advanced individual training in medical care.

2. Registered Nurse (RN) or Nurse Practitioner (NP): Military nurses provide care to military personnel, veterans, and their families. Becoming a RN requires a Nursing Degree (BSN) while a NP would require a Master’s Degree in Nursing. The military often offers scholarships in return for service obligation.

3. Military Physician: Physicians in the military diagnose and treat soldiers and their families in a variety of specialties. To do this, you need to complete a Bachelor's Degree, attend medical school to earn an MD or DO, and then finish a residency. The military offers programs like the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), which can help cover the cost of medical school.

4. Psychologist: Military psychologists provide mental health care and support to service members and their families. This requires a Doctoral Degree in Psychology and licensure.

5. Physical Therapist: Physical therapists help patients recover and improve physical ability after injury or illness. A Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Degree is needed.

6. Biomedical Laboratory Officer: This role involves directing and coordinating activities of personnel engaged in performing chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests in a clinical laboratory. You would need at least a bachelor's degree, with certain prerequisites in science.

7. Preventive Medicine Specialist: These specialists are involved in the prevention and control of disease transmission. It involves conducting or assisting with preventive medicine inspections, surveys including food service and facilities. A high school diploma or GED is required as well as training in identifying health hazards.

These positions often involve scholarships or programs that can help pay for necessary medical schooling in exchange for a few years of service. It's recommended to meet with a local military recruiter or a career counselor at school to explore these options and understand the associated training or education requirements, as well as any contractual obligations associated with military-funded education programs.
