Resume Tips for Transitioning from Military to Civilian Jobs

I'm working on my resume as I transition from a military career to civilian employment. Are there templates or tips to highlight my skills effectively for potential employers outside of military roles?

As someone who has assisted with such transitions, there are a few steps you can take to help potential employers understand the depth and breadth of your capabilities.

First and foremost, translating your military skills into easier-to-understand civilian terms is key. Military jargon and abbreviations can be confusing for those unfamiliar. As an example, if you were responsible for equipment management but the military term was Supply Chain Logistician, use the industry-standard language on your resume.

Another critical aspect is presenting your leadership experience. Due to the nature of military work, irrespective of your specific role, there's a good chance you were in charge of a team or a project. Be sure to focus on these experiences and clearly articulate the managerial or leadership responsibilities you had.

Transferable skills should be a central focus. Being in the military, some of the desirable skills you can highlight include problem-solving abilities, adaptability, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work under high-stress situations. Try to incorporate these into your past job descriptions to make it easier for a civilian employer to see the connection.

It might be beneficial to utilize a skills-based resume instead of a chronological one, especially if you're trying to pivot into a job that seemingly bears little resemblance to your duties in the military. This format allows you to focus on relevant competencies and skills right at the top of your resume while still displaying your work history.

Lastly, don't forget to include any significant achievements or recognitions you received during your service. These can highlight personal traits, commitment, and skills that can make you a standout candidate.

It's worth keeping in mind that different industries may value different aspects of your military experience, so it may be beneficial to tailor your resume for each job application based on the requirements mentioned in the job description. Good luck with your transition!
