ASVAB Requirements for the Coast Guard Academy

Does anyone know if taking the ASVAB is part of the requirements for admission into the Coast Guard Academy? If so, what scores are they looking for, and how should I prepare for this test?

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) for admission. Instead, this military academy has other criteria for admission that are similar to other colleges. The main requirements include having a strong academic record (especially in mathematics and the sciences), demonstrating leadership potential through extracurricular activities, and maintaining good physical fitness.

A competitive GPA and SAT or ACT scores are important. For instance, many successful applicants to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy have SAT scores in the range of 1300-1400 (out of 1600).

In terms of physical standards, the academy requires applicants to pass a Physical Fitness Exam (PFE) which measures push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5 mile run.

Moreover, the academy values leadership experiences. Thus, participation (particularly in leadership roles) in sports, community service, Boys/Girls State, Eagle Scout/Gold Award, or other extracurricular activities could strengthen your application.

Lastly, you will need to clear a medical exam and possess good moral character. The academy seeks candidates who demonstrate integrity, enthusiasm, motivation, and dedication to service.

While the ASVAB isn't required for the Coast Guard Academy, it is used by other sectors of the military to determine qualifications for enlistment and certain job roles. Preparation for the ASVAB could include studying with review books that cover the nine sections of the test, which include General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information, Auto Information, Shop Information, and Mechanical Comprehension.
