How challenging is the CFA for Coast Guard Academy admissions?

I'm considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy and heard about the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA). Can anyone share insights on how to best prepare for it to make my application more competitive?

The Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) is indeed a part of the application process for the Coast Guard Academy. Essentially, it's a test of your physical fitness, intended to measure your strength, agility, speed, and endurance.

The CFA consists of six events: basketball throw, pull-ups (or the flexed arm hang for females), shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and a one-mile run. Each applicant's performance in these events is scored and then combined into an overall fitness score.

Preparing for the CFA requires a routine, and it's best to start training several months in advance. Cardiovascular activities such as running, swimming or biking can be useful for the endurance parts of the assessment. Strength training exercises like push-ups, pull-ups and crunches will help with the strength-based events. Do not just focus solely on the exercise related to each CFA event - a balanced and well-rounded fitness program will raise your overall fitness level and help you in all CFA events.

Remember, you should always warm up before starting the exercises and also cool down afterwards to prevent injury. It's also crucial not to exhaust yourself immediately before the assessment—rest is essential for peak performance.

Finally, practice in a similar sequence as the actual CFA, this will allow your body to get used to the demands of the assessments in their specific order.

Stay disciplined, follow a regular schedule, and focus on both strength and endurance, and you should see significant improvements over time. Good luck!
