What's day one like at the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm curious about what to expect on the first day at the Coast Guard Academy. What happens when you first arrive? Any tips for dealing with the new environment and routines?

The first day at the United States Coast Guard Academy, like many other military academies, is known as Reporting-In Day, or R-day, marking the official start of your 200-week-long training as a cadet. R-day is a transformative experience, where you transition from civilian life to life as a Coast Guard Cadet.

On arrival, cadets are assisted in processing their paperwork, after which they bid farewell to their family. This is followed by immersion into the academy's customs and courtesies, issuing of uniforms, and assigning of squad and platoon. Cadets are introduced to their cadet cadre - the technically skilled seniors who are responsible for transforming the civilian students into model cadets.

Next, you'll undergo a series of orientation activities, drills, and classes, which are designed to instill discipline and a sense of camaraderie. You will learn about the Honor Concept, the Cadet Regulations, and be tested on physical fitness standards. Also, you'll get your military haircut, making your transformation more conspicuous.

The priority here is efficiency - you'll be led through different stations, each serving a specific purpose. It might feel overwhelming initially, but keep in mind that it's a part of the process. The first two weeks, known as Swab Summer, are the most challenging but designed to build up mental and physical resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills.

Remember that every other cadet is experiencing the same challenges and intervening frustrations you might face. Connect with your peers, rely on each other, stay calm, and remember the end goal. Everyone is aiming to make it through together, so you're not alone. It's an intensive process but remember, it's all structured to prepare you for your role in the Coast Guard. Good luck!
