What's the freshman experience like at the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy and would love to know more about what freshman year is like. Are there any special challenges or things I should be aware of?

The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) provides a unique freshmen experience compared to traditional colleges. As a military service academy, the first year, known as "Swab Summer," is designed to be challenging, both physically and mentally, aiming to transition students from civilian life to life as a Cadet and future Coast Guardsman.

The freshmen year begins with an intense seven-week basic training regimen, often described as one of the most challenging experiences at the Academy. During this period of Swab Summer, students will be pushed to their limits before they can officially become cadets. You can expect to wake up early, go to bed late, receive military instruction, perform physical training, and participate in seamanship training.

Freshmen, known as Swabs, learn basic rules, customs, and traditions of the military and specifically the Coast Guard service during Swab Summer. This also includes physical fitness, teamwork, and a deep sense of discipline. You will also learn to respect and rely on your peers, as you work through the program together.

Being a Swab doesn't end with the summer, though. Throughout your first year at the Academy, you'll continue to face high academic and physical expectations, with a greater emphasis on developing leadership skills and personal responsibility.

Remember, support systems are in place to help you through this challenging experience. The faculty, upperclassmen, and the psychologists and chaplains on staff are there to assist you all year round.

At the end of the first "Swab Year", there's a ceremony passage where you'll transition from Swab status. You'll officially be recognized as a part of the Corps of Cadets, with increased privileges and responsibilities.
