Coast Guard Academy Height and Weight Standards

I'm looking into applying to the Coast Guard Academy and want to know more about their height and weight standards. Can anyone clarify the requirements? Are there any exceptions or things to keep in mind when preparing to apply?

The US Coast Guard Academy does have both height and weight standards for those applying to be students (known as cadets). These standards are set not only to maintain a certain level of uniformity but also to ensure that all cadets are capable of performing the physical tasks that could be required of them both during their time at the academy and in their subsequent careers in the Coast Guard.

For Height: The minimum height for both men and women is 60 inches, and the maximum is 80 inches.

For Weight: It's based on the height and age of the applicant but generally, for males around 18 years old, it ranges from around 132 lbs to 201 lbs, and for females the same age, it's about 120 lbs to 179 lbs.

However, even if an applicant is over the weight allowance for their height, if their body fat percentage is within the acceptable limit, they may still qualify. For males, that's about 20%, and for females it's about 28%.

Additionally, if an applicant doesn't fit within the listed height and weight standards, it doesn't mean that this is a hard barrier for you to pass the fitness examination or to get admitted into the Academy. There are Waist-to-Hip Ratio and Body Fat Percentage consideration that could be granted as an exception for people who are especially muscular.

As for preparing to apply, alongside striving to meet these standards, considering a structured and well-rounded physical fitness schedule would be highly beneficial. This includes a balanced mix of cardio, strength training, flexibility exercises and proper nutrition as it's important for the applicant to be physically prepared for the rigorous physical training that will be part of the academy experience.

Remember, these standards are put into place to not only ensure that all cadets are able to handle the physical rigors of service, but also for the health and safety of the individual cadets themselves. It is always beneficial to consult a physician or a professional trainer when embarking upon rigorous physical training or significant changes to your diet.
