What's student life like at the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm looking into applying to the Coast Guard Academy and I'm curious about what student life is like there. Are there any clubs or organizations that stand out? How's the campus community and social scene?

Student life at the United States Coast Guard Academy (CGA) is highly structured, with an emphasis on leadership, character development, and professional training, especially in comparison to a traditional college or university. This might result in a student life that is somewhat different from what one might experience at a regular college.

There are over dozens of clubs and organizations at CGA that cater to a wide range of interests. There's something for everyone, from music ensembles and sports clubs to linguistics and cultural associations. Some of the standout organizations include Cadets Against Sexual Assault (CASA) and the Genesis Council which works towards fostering an inclusive environment for minoritized students.

The campus community at CGA is quite close-knit, as the academy admits approximately 300 cadets per class. Cadets address each other by their last names, which instills a sense of respect and camaraderie. All students live on campus in Chase Hall, adding to the tight-knit nature of the community.

As for the social scene, CGA, like other service academies, is not a typical college environment. The focus is more on training and leadership, but that doesn't mean there isn't time for social activities. There are traditional events like Homecoming and a number of formal dances throughout the year such as the Ring Dance and Commencement Ball. The Academy also organizes a morale program which includes various events like cookouts and movie nights to help cadets unwind.

Overall, student life at the Coast Guard Academy is rewarding, but also challenging, as it prepares cadets for a career in military service. It is an environment that promotes discipline, leadership, and community, offering opportunities for growth both personally and professionally.
