What's freshman year like at the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm really interested in the Coast Guard Academy and would love some insights into what freshman year is like there. How's the transition, and are there any unique challenges I should prepare for?

Transitioning into any service academy, including the Coast Guard, is indeed different from attending a traditional four-year college. Your freshman year, known as "Swab Summer", features a seven-week intense training program that includes physical fitness exercises, extensive military protocol lessons, and team building activities. You should prepare physically, mentally, and emotionally to deal with the intensity and rigor of this training.

Academics at the Coast Guard Academy can be quite challenging as well. The courses often focus on science, technology, and math-based subjects, so you should be prepared to thrive in these areas. At the same time, the academy values a liberal arts education, so you'll also be expected to demonstrate competence in humanities and social sciences.

You'll have support, though, from the "sea of blue" - your fellow cadets who are going through the same trials and tribulations. Your first-year classmates become your tight-knit support group, and the camaraderie you build with them would be enduring.

Additionally, facing and overcoming the unique challenges of this first year could instill a sense of accomplishment and resilience that can carry you forward in your journey. It's not uncommon for graduates to look back at Swab Summer and their freshman year as formative experiences that prepared them for successful careers in military service and beyond.

So, it's important to stay focused on your goals, remain open to learning, connect with your classmates, and remember that the obstacles you overcome will make you stronger. The Guiding Principles of the Coast Guard: Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty, should become the pillars of your journey at the academy.
