Coast Guard Academy Host Parents Program?

I've heard about host families for Coast Guard Academy cadets. How does this program work? Are host parents assigned to all cadets, or do you have to apply? I'm just trying to understand what life outside campus might be like.

The Sponsor Family Program at the Coast Guard Academy is a voluntary program that pairs up Academy personnel or local families with cadets. The goal of this program is to provide a local support system to cadets outside of the militaristic campus environment, which can offer a comforting atmosphere and a "home away from home."

While not every cadet is assigned a sponsor family, it's available to any cadet who wishes to participate, and the assignment process is not automatic. Cadets can apply to be matched with a host family. Similarly, families that are interested in participating in this program also sign up and typically go through a vetting process to ensure the safety and well-being of cadets.

From there, the Academy typically tries to match cadets with families based on common interests. As a "host child," you would generally be invited to visit your host family's home for meals, holidays, or weekends away from the Academy. The frequency of meetings is usually decided according to mutual convenience and comfort. However, the relationship may evolve depending on the individual cadet and family's bonding.

As you'll discover, the host parent program can be a remarkable avenue for experiencing a family atmosphere, relaxing, bonding, and even networking during your time at the Academy.

However, it's crucial for you to be aware that while host parents provide a supportive role, they're not substitutes for the official guidance and counseling services provided by the Academy. If you're dealing with academic or personal issues, your advisers, faculty member, and Academy's professional counseling services are the appropriate resources.

In terms of life outside campus, the New London area where the Coast Guard Academy is located, is itself pretty lively. It's close to beaches, historical sites, and there are towns nearby with shopping, food, and outdoor activities. Being involved in the local community, either through the Sponsor Family program or your own exploration, can help balance out the rigorous academic and military lifestyle at the Academy.
