What does the Coast Guard Academy offer in terms of majors and minors?

I'm curious about the academic offerings at the Coast Guard Academy. Specifically, what kinds of majors and minors can you pursue there? Are there any unique programs not found at other military academies?

The United States Coast Guard Academy offers a range of academic programs, with a focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, in line with its mission to produce leaders of character who are prepared to serve in the Coast Guard.

The academy offers nine majors, which are: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Marine and Environmental Sciences, Operations Research and Computer Analysis, Management, Government, and Maritime Policy and Management. Each of these programs is designed to equip cadets with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary for their roles in the Coast Guard and beyond.

It's also worth noting that, rather than having traditional minors, the Coast Guard Academy offers "tracks" within some majors. These tracks allow cadets to focus on a particular area of interest within their major. For example, within the Management major, cadets can select a track in either Public Policy or Operations Management.

As for unique offerings, the academy's program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering stands out. This program equips cadets with the skills needed to design, construct, and maintain naval vessels, from small boats to large cutters, which is a critical function of the Coast Guard. Furthermore, the academy's Maritime Policy and Management program is also unique, providing cadets with insights into maritime policy, port operations, shipping, and logistics that aren't typically offered at other military academies.

Remember that even though these are the majors offered, all students are required to take a core curriculum that is meant to develop a wide range of skills and understanding across multiple disciplines. It includes courses in humanities, mathematics and science, engineering, professional maritime studies, leadership and ethics. This is to ensure that all graduates have a well-rounded education that prepares them for diverse roles in the Coast Guard.
