I'm thinking about applying to the Coast Guard Academy, but I'm not sure what majors they offer. Does anyone know the main academic programs or fields of study available there? Any insights on popular or unique majors?
At the United States Coast Guard Academy, all cadets graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, however, there are nine major areas of study available.
The majors that you can choose from are: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Operations Research and Data Analytics, Marine and Environmental Sciences, Government, Management, and Cyber Systems.
It's important to note that as of 2022, the candidates for Class of 2026 must declare a major at the beginning of their second year -- popular majors typically are those in Engineering, although the Government major has been favored among cadets interested in policy-making and law.
As for unique majors, the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering major stands out. Naval Architecture is essentially ship design, and it's an incredibly unique program that you won't find in many other places. Similarly, the Marine and Environmental Sciences major provides unique course work and experiential learning opportunities that are ideal for those interested in oceanography, marine biology, and environmental science.
Additionally, every cadet—regardless of major—will complete courses in nautical science to ensure they're prepared for their future careers in the Coast Guard. In short, there's a wide range of fields of study you can delve into at the Academy, all the while preparing for a fulfilling career in the service.
