I'm curious about how my physical training (PT) score will be calculated if I apply to the Coast Guard Academy. What factors are included in determining this score, and how high does it need to be?
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) determines the Physical Fitness Examination (PFE) score based on three components: push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run. Here's the breakdown of each component:
- Push-ups: Number of cadence push-ups you can do in 2 minutes
- Sit-ups: Number of sit-ups you can do in 2 minutes
- 1.5-mile run: Time it takes to run 1.5 miles
Each of these activities is scored separately, based on applicant age and gender. The score for each activity typically has a maximum of 100 points. The scores from the three exercises are then added together to give a total score out of 300.
Recent average scores are below:
Males
Push-ups: 38 (71 points)
Sit-ups: 79 (78 points)
1.5 mile run: 10:31 (66 points)
Total: 215 points
Females
Push-ups: 27 (70 points)
Sit-ups: 75 (75 points)
1.5 mile run: 12:29 (64 points)
Total: 209 points
It's important to strive for as high a score as possible, but at a minimum, try for the average scores above, as the PFE is a reflection of your physical preparedness and factors into the overall candidate evaluation process.
In addition to passing the PFE for entrance to USCGA, cadets must pass this test at the beginning of every semester, and the minimum to graduate is 200 points. Good luck with your training!
