How do recommendations work for the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm putting together my application for the Coast Guard Academy and am a bit confused about the recommendation letters. Who do they prefer to get recommendations from? Any tips on what to highlight would be super helpful!

The Coast Guard Academy's recommendation letters requirements are a bit unique compared to many other colleges. The main difference is that they require you specifically to have two recommendations from math or science teachers.

First, a letter of recommendation is required from both a math and an English teacher, as well as a high school counselor. These evaluations ask the teachers to answer specific questions about your abilities, including your academic aptitude and personal traits.

While teachers are asked to provide insight into your academic skills in math and science, your school counselor or official is asked to provide a more holistic view of your time in high school. You can also submit up to two additional letters of recommendation, which is a good idea to maximize your chances of admission.

As for what to highlight, remember that the Coast Guard Academy is looking for students who not only excel academically, particularly in STEM subjects, but also those who exhibit qualities like leadership, service, commitment, physical fitness, and character. Therefore, it'd be beneficial if your recommenders could comment on both your academic prowess and these personal qualities.

One final thing to keep in mind is that the Coast Guard Academy values honesty very highly. Applicants who demonstrate integrity tend to stand out.

Good luck with your application!
