What to expect at the Coast Guard Academy Winter Formal?

I'm thinking ahead about my potential future at the Coast Guard Academy and heard there's a winter formal event. Can anyone share what it's like? I'm curious about what happens and if all cadets attend.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Holiday Ball is indeed a highlight of the social calendar. To put it simply, it's a grand, organized dance event that tends to happen in December, depending on the academic and training schedule.

While all cadets are encouraged to participate, attendance isn't required. However, most cadets do choose to attend as it's one of the significant social events of the year where you can let loose, relax and have some fun amidst the intense academic and training programs.

The night typically begins with a formal dinner, followed by a grand dance event. The ballroom itself is beautifully decorated, usually conceptualized around a unique theme each year. Traditional dance music accompanies the evening, and there's usually a diversity of tunes that cater to various tastes.

Expect to see your peers and faculty members in formal attire. Male cadets typically wear their Service Dress Blues, which is the formal military uniform, while female cadets can choose between their Service Dress Blues or a formal gown that adheres to the event's dress code. If you choose to bring a guest from outside the academy, they too are expected to dress formally.

The Winter Formal serves as an excellent opportunity to interact with your peers and faculty outside of the usual academy environment. It's a chance to build camaraderie, enjoy some dancing, and reminisce about the night for years to come!
