What happens on R-Day at the US Coast Guard Academy?

I've read a bit about R-Day at the Coast Guard Academy, but I'm curious to know more. What should new cadets expect on this day? Is there any advice on how to prepare or what to bring?

"R-Day" or Reporting-in Day at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) is the day when new cadets officially begin their military training. Think of it as the start of your four-year journey at the academy and your professional military career.

During R-Day, you will report to the academy, your family will bid you farewell, and you will then begin a series of administrative processing tasks. These tasks include uniform issue, medical screening, and various briefings on the academy's rules and standards. This day will be filled with a series of demanding activities which is basically the beginning of "Swab Summer," the seven-week training program for all new cadets.

To prepare for R-Day, ensure that you are in good physical shape. The transition from civilian life to a military regimen can be challenging, so being physically fit will help ease the process. Walking, running, calisthenics, and other forms of physical training are highly recommended before you report to the academy.

As for what to bring, the Coast Guard Academy usually provides a list of required items in your appointment package, but typically, you should bring running shoes, personal hygiene items, and a series of legal documents (Social Security card, birth certificate, etc). Remember, less is more on R-Day. You want to travel light as you'll be issued most of your necessities upon arrival.

At the end of your first day, there's an event called "The Oath of Office" where you'll take an oath to perform your duties and commit to your career as a Coast Guard officer. It’s a very emotional and memorable event, marking the beginning of your journey.

Remember, R-Day is only the start! The real challenge begins with the start of Swab Summer, which is a testing period meant to prepare you for life at the academy and beyond. Best of luck on your journey!
