What is the curriculum like at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy?

I'm really interested in attending the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, but I'm curious about the curriculum. What subjects and areas of study should I expect? How rigorous is the academic program there?

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy offers a diverse and rigorous curriculum that is shaped by their mission of developing leaders of character. You can expect a curriculum that is balanced with both technical and professional development aspects.

Students at the Coast Guard Academy are required to major in one of nine academic programs: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Cyber Systems, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Operations Research and Computer Analysis, Marine and Environmental Sciences, Government, or Management. Even though you select a major, the coursework is fairly structured and incorporates classes from different disciplines to ensure a well-rounded education. Cadets also study strategic intelligence, law enforcement, maritime law, and crisis response, which are directly relevant to their future roles.

The first two years at the Academy are generally focused on building a foundation in math, science, and humanities, while the third and fourth years revolve around in-depth study in your major. All cadets complete courses in leadership and maritime policy, regardless of their major.

As for the rigor, the academics at the Coast Guard Academy are known to be challenging, partly due to the physical and leadership training components that are integral parts of a cadet's life. Cadets often note that time management skills and discipline are crucial for finding a balance between coursework, athletics, leadership responsibilities, and professional training.

In addition to coursework, each summer, cadets participate in a variety of training experiences that put their classroom learning to the test. First-year cadets (also known as swabs) undergo Swab Summer, a seven-week military training program. After their first year, cadets spend their summers on training vessels and shore stations, studying navigation and seamanship, and acquiring necessary professional knowledge and skills.
