What is the first year experience like at the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy and I'm curious about what the first year is like. What challenges do cadets face? Any advice for someone preparing for that first year?

The first-year at the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) brings a host of new experiences, and key challenges commonly center around adjusting to the military lifestyle, rigorous academic schedule, and physical training requirements.

Swab Summer is notorious for its intensity, serving as a 7 week-long introductory phase designed to transition civilians into the military lifestyle. During this time, you should expect extensive physical training, marching, and team-building activities. It's intense, but it's designed to develop the discipline, organization, and teamwork skills that are crucial for successful cadets and officers.

Once academic classes begin, the rigorous academic curriculum can take adjusting to, with a heavy focus on STEM subjects. The curriculum can be tough; however, it's important to remember that resources are available, including faculty and classmates, to help you adjust.

Physically, cadets are expected to maintain a good state of physical fitness. Regular physical training is a part of life at the academy, and at the end of the first year, all cadets must pass a Physical Fitness Exam, which includes a 1.5-mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, and a swim test.
