What do you actually do at the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm really curious about what life is like at the Coast Guard Academy. What kind of activities or programs do cadets participate in during their time there? I want to know about both academic and extracurricular stuff.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy offers a lifestyle that merges rigorous academic coursework with professional development and physical fitness.

On the academic front, the Academy offers nine major fields of study, including fields such as Marine Science, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, and Government. Like other service academies, part of each weekday is dedicated to attending classes, while additional time is often dedicated to studying, working on assignments, or participating in group projects.

Professional development at the Coast Guard Academy is intense. Cadets undergo leadership training environments and gain hands-on experience with Coast Guard missions. During the summers, cadets participate in various training programs to gain practical skills in areas including navigation, seamanship, vessel operations, and leadership. This isn't summer camp; this is preparing for your future career as an officer in the Coast Guard.

On the physical front, cadets are required to participate in athletics—either on one of the Academy's Division III sports teams or in intramural sports—and a rigorous physical training and testing regimen.

Extracurricular activities are an important part of cadet life too. Cadets can participate in a wide array of clubs and organizations. There are musical groups like the Windjammers Drum & Bugle Corps and the Idlers Glee Club. Additionally, there are professional clubs, like the American Society of Civil Engineers, and recreational clubs, like the Running Club.

Moreover, community service plays a crucial role in Academy life. All cadets are expected to complete volunteer hours, which can range from local environmental cleanups to mentoring local youth.

In short, life at the Coast Guard Academy is truly multifaceted, blending rigorous academics, physical fitness, professional training, and a thriving community.
