What opportunities are there in video production within the military?

I'm considering combining my interest in video production with a career in the military. Are there specific roles that involve video editing or production? I'd love to hear from anyone who knows about this or has experience in a similar position.

Absolutely, there are indeed opportunities within the military that cater to individuals with skills in video production. Quite similar to civilian career paths, the military also has positions for those who have mastered technical aspects of filming, editing, and producing video content.

One such career pathway is through the role of a Combat Camera Officer in branches like the Air Force, where you'd manage teams dedicated to obtaining still and motion imagery. Also, there's the role of a Public Affairs Officer which involves disseminating information through various forms of media, including videos. Both these roles involve planning, filming, and editing videos to provide visual information not just for public relations and recruiting, but also to assist in operational and intelligence decisions.

The Army also has the job of producing videos in the form of Combat Documentation/Production Specialists (MOS 25V). They are responsible for supervising, planning, or operating electronic and film-based still, video, and audio acquisition equipment. They document and produce videos on army operations, activities, and functions.

The Navy has Mass Communication Specialists who are involved in creating video content for various purposes from intelligence to PR. They could be photographing a naval exercise, developing film in a darkroom, or managing the video library onboard a ship.

Remember the training offered in these positions is quite robust, but having a background in video production would definitely give you a strong foundation. It's definitely a unique path which allows you to utilize your video production skills while serving your country!
