How does your ASVAB score influence military job options?

I'm preparing for the ASVAB and curious about how my score will affect the range of military jobs available to me. Can anyone explain how the scoring works and which areas might be most important for certain roles?

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a test used by all branches of the U.S. military to evaluate a candidate's potential for specific jobs within the service.

The ASVAB test consists of nine sections: General Science (GS), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Electronics Information (EI), Automotive and Shop Information (AS), Mechanical Comprehension (MC), and Assembling Objects (AO).

The score you receive on each of these sections doesn't simply reveal how well you did on that particular section. Instead, the scores of several sections are combined into composite scores, also known as line scores, which are utilized to determine your qualifications for various military occupations.

Different branches of the military utilize different combinations of the ASVAB subtests for the line scores. For example, to qualify for a job in the cybersecurity field in the Army, your scores in Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, and Mathematics Knowledge may be combined for your qualification score. Contrastingly, an occupation in avionics in the Air Force may rely more heavily on scores from the General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, and Electronics Information sections.

Another crucial score is your AFQT score (Armed Forces Qualification Test), which determines your basic eligibility to enlist in the military. This score is derived from four of the subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension.

In short, different military jobs will have different ASVAB score requirements, and these can vary widely based on the specific skills and knowledge they require. You might find it helpful to look up the ASVAB requirements for the specific military occupations you're interested in, and focus your study efforts on those areas of the test.
