Finding the Best Job for Retired Military Personnel

For those who have retired from the military, what are some of the best job options available? I'm curious about roles where military experience is highly valued and can be leveraged effectively.

One sought-after career path for military retirees is working in the defense industry. Many defense contractors value the unique knowledge and skills of military veterans. You might look into roles related to project management, logistcs, or strategic planning, where your tactical and operational experience could be very useful.

Another option is in federal, local or state government roles. Similar to defense contracting, your military experience is highly valued here, especially for jobs within departments like Homeland Security or the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Teaching can be a rewarding career for military veterans as well, especially within Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs at high schools or in one of the service academies. Military retirees bring firsthand knowledge of leadership principles and military values, providing rich wisdom to inspire the next generation.

Many veterans also find success transitioning into law enforcement or private security jobs. These fields value the discipline, physical training, and understanding of chain of command that's part of military training.

A role in IT or cyber security is another excellent path if you gained specialized experience in these areas during your service. You might consider getting additional certifications to make yourself even more competitive in these fields, like obtaining a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) designation.

No matter which path you choose, don't forget about using resources available to you. There are job placement programs and career resources designed specifically to help veterans transition to civilian life. For instance, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs offers the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) Program which provides job training, employment accommodations and resume development. Remember to leverage networking within the veteran community and beyond - it can go a long way in facilitating a successful career transition.
