How Tough is the US Coast Guard Academy Really?

I'm considering applying to the US Coast Guard Academy, but I've heard it's quite challenging. Can anyone confirm how intense the academics and training are? Any personal experiences would be super helpful as I weigh my options!

The United States Coast Guard Academy is indeed challenging, but quite rewarding, and prepares students well for a career in military service. Firstly, the admission process is competitive. Applicants are evaluated based on academic performance, leadership potential, physical fitness, and character.

Once admitted, cadets engage in a rigorous 4-year program that combines strong academic preparation and leadership development, alongside physical fitness training to prepare for Coast Guard service. The academic workload is intense as Coast Guard offers 10 rigorous majors, including civil engineering, marine environmental science, and government, among others. Alumni often evaluate the Academy as a demanding academic institution, not unlike the workload you might find at other top colleges and universities.

Cadets also take part in active military training and have duties or drills each morning and on some afternoons. In addition, there's an increased expectation for discipline and professionalism in aspects of daily life, such as maintaining a clean dormitory area and wearing a uniform.

Then after the first year comes a challenging summer program, called "Swab Summer," where aspiring cadets undergo basic military training that's known to be physically and mentally tough. And finally, graduating cadets commit to serving at least five years in the Coast Guard as Officers, which is a significant long-term commitment.

However, it's important to highlight the benefits - from the exceptional leadership development to the fact that students graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, an Officers commission, and have no college debt, since the academy fully funds your tuition and provides a monthly stipend.
