What are the physical fitness exam requirements for the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm thinking about applying to the Coast Guard Academy and I've heard the physical fitness exam is pretty tough. Can anyone share what the specific requirements are and how best to prepare for them? Any personal experiences would be helpful!

The United States Coast Guard Academy's Physical Fitness Exam (PFE) consists of three elements: push-ups, sit-ups, and a timed 1.5-mile run. This trifecta is designed to measure overall strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness.

Here's a concise breakdown of the expectations for both men and women (as per the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's guidelines for the class of 2026):

1. Push-ups: Men are expected to perform at least 42 push-ups in 2 minutes, whereas women are expected to complete at least 19 in the same time frame.

2. Sit-ups: Men are expected to complete at least 62 sit-ups in 2 minutes, while women are expected to complete 52 within the same period.

3. 1.5 Mile Run: Men should complete the run in 11:40 or less, while women have a recommended standard of 13:40 or less.

To train for any exercise-based fitness test, create a routine that slowly increases in intensity over time, ensure you're addressing all the key areas (endurance, strength, and cardiovascular fitness in this case), and stick to a regular workout schedule. Make sure to well-hydrate and maintain a nutritionally balanced diet as it can influence your energy levels tremendously.

Please note that exceeding the minimum standards, of course, puts you in a more competitive position. Thus, it may be beneficial to have a training routine under the supervision of a physical trainer or other fitness professional who can nail down the technique for push-ups and sit-ups as well as guide with a proper cardio training schedule. Also, remember that everyone's physical capabilities differ, so while one method may work for one person, it may not work for you, tweak your training to what suits you best.

Best of luck with your preparations!
