Which jobs require military experience?

After serving in the military, I'm wondering what civilian roles typically seek candidates with military backgrounds. Are there specific industries or job titles that value military experience highly?

There are numerous sectors and job roles in the civilian workforce where employers value military experience. This typically comes down to the transferable skills and attributes that individuals with a military background often possess - leadership, dedication, strategic planning, teamwork, discipline, and the ability to operate under pressure, just to name a few.

One field where military experience is particularly appreciated is law enforcement and security. Many former service personnel transition into roles such as police officers, security managers, or private contractors due to the close alignment of skills required in these roles. Similarly, the federal government in various agencies like the FBI, CIA, and DEA often seek out those with military experience for their ability to handle classified information and undertake critical missions.

Many veterans excel in project management roles in diverse industries such as construction, IT, and finance. Their experience in managing large-scale operations and teams, and developing and executing strategic plans, makes them strong candidates for these positions.

In the IT industry, cybersecurity is an area where employers value individuals with a military background. Veterans who specialize in intelligence work often successfully transition into roles related to information assurance or cyber protection.

Also, defense contractors or aerospace companies, like Lockheed Martin and Boeing, often seek veterans because they value the combination of military experience with technical skills, plus many roles in this area require security clearances that veterans may already possess.

Lastly, many veterans become entrepreneurial and start their businesses. The leadership, determination, and discipline developed in the military often lend themselves well to entrepreneurial endeavors.

Remember, while the aforementioned roles might lean towards applicants with military experience, nearly any career field can benefit from your unique skill set. It's about highlighting those transferable skills and experiences in your application materials and interviews. So, consider what you enjoyed doing during your service and how those skills could intersect with your post-military career aspirations.
